This is my own story. I offer it because I have received many emails from
people who have been moved by what they have read on my biography page. It
is also true that the quality of the message (ie my cancer books) depends to
a degree on the qualities of the messenger.
The main focus of the book is the impact that a profoundly handicapped
child (my daughter, Stevie) had on my life. I went from being a solitary,
rather anti-social writer to founder of two charities (one of which is
currently in the process of transforming the provision of services
throughout China). What value can the life of a blind, epileptic,
incapacitated little girl have? I hope this book answers that question loud
and clear.

But, more pertinently, this book is also about the painful year that my
wife Bernadette and I went through trying to cope, often inadequately, with
her cancer. It is possible that through reading my experiences others may be
able to avoid some of the pitfalls that tripped us up.
